Opal is an amorphous form of silica, chemically similar to quartz, but containing 3% to 21% water within its mineral structure. Gem grade opals usually have 6% to 10% water content. Opal is a sedimentary stone. Under the proper conditions, water percolates through the earth, becoming rich in dissolved silicates.
27th Dec 2019 07:54 UTCMohammad Iskandar Marzuki. Chrysopal and prase opal are very confusing... Both green and both nickel colored. The green Indonesian opal in the picture seem doesnt fits in chrysopal and prase opal definition. Varieties of Opals from South East Asian nearly unknown to the West.
The opals show a homogeneous chemical composition with very high contents of Ni and lower of Mg, Ca, Fe and transition elements like Zn, Cr and Co. Al and K are nearly absent. The chemical composition of the opals reflects that of serpentine rocks. Because of its abundance, the cromophore element responsible for the green color is Ni.
Black opals are a highly desirable and sought-after Opal and are treasured the world over because it is believed that the color play is best displayed in the black opal. In fact, the natural black color highlights all the different colors, and black is considered to be one of the most valuable opals. Harlequin Opal
