Overburden In Opencast Mines Crusher Quarry Mining. Open cast mine planning OPENCAST WORKINGS216 . Steps in Opencast mining. Type of plans It is suggested that in multi-seam working higher rate of coal production should be planned from top seams. The width of the cut taken by the dragline in overburden shall as far as practicable be maintained ...
The continuously increasing demand of coal has led to rapid opencast mining activities with high stripping ratio of 1:12 to 1:15, in turn requiring large quantities of overburden to be mined and its storage poses serious problem. Recently, few dump failures have taken place. Destabilisation of overburden dump hampers the production of the mine.

Opencast mining is a mining process that generates huge amount of rock waste. Waste rock material generated along with mining is called mine overburden (Prashant et al., 2010). During opencast mining, the overlying soil is removed and the fragmented rock is heaped in the form of overburden dumps (Ghosh, 2002).
During opencast mining of coal, the strata lying above coal seam is known as overburden comprising of clay alluvial sand and sandstone with rich silica content. The overburden is removed to expose and extract coal from beneath. After completion of coal extraction, the overburden is used for back filling to reclaim the land in its original shape.
Currently almost 65 % of the coal in Australia is being produced by opencast mining methods. Mining equipments such as draglines, dredgers or bucket wheel excavators, trucks and shovels, and dozers are the main equipments employed for overburden removal and coal extraction. The choice of equipment for a
In mining overburden also called waste or spoil is the material that lies above an area that lends itself to economical exploitation such as the rock soil and ecosystem that lies above a coal seam or ore body Overburden is distinct from tailings the material that remains after economically …

Open-cast mining is one of the most popular surface mining methods mostly employed for bedded deposits. The kind of minerals or rocks mined this way are found near the surface; where the overburden (surface material covering the valuable deposit) is relatively thin or the material of interest is structurally unsuitable for tunneling.
To achieve this objective, an opencast coal mining area was selected to generate site-specific emission data and collect respirable dust measurement samples. The study covered various mining activities in different locations including overburden loading, stock yard, coal loading, drilling, and coal handling plant.

Removal of overburden was done by shovel-dumper combination. Overburden rocks consists of medium grained porous Sandstone of average 50 MPa compressive strength and was typified with horizontal open joints. These joints cause venting of gas energy leading to boulder formation of the size ranging from 1 m {sup 3} to 50 m {sup 3}.
The head of the Vostochny opencast mine, Alexander Chernov, highlighted that the improvements in haulage efficiency would not have been possible without a SUEK investment programme targeting improvements in machinery and equipment. In 2017 alone, the open pit received three 130 t BelAZ-75131 dump trucks, which were commissioned in late February.
Overburden casting is not suitable for all mines and not all mines that adopt it will get the same results. The percentage casted into mined-out pits, called effective casting ratio (ECR), depends on the factors of engineering geology of the deposit and strata, blast parameters, the nature, and characteristics of explosives to be used.
